Sorenson - “Sorensign” App Concept

Company
Sorenson Communications

Brief overview
The UX team had been tasked with brainstorming new innovative product ideas to help push the company ahead. One idea, called Sorensign, is a sign language learning app that would enable users to learn different sign languages from around the globe. I led the research initiative for this project.

Project duration
2 months

My role & contribution
Lead UX Researcher. After conducting brief competitor analysis, I interviewed 16 participants (a mixture of Deaf and hearing individuals) to find out what people would want in a sign language learning app and to collect feedback about tools that already exist. Once interviews finished, I analyzed the responses and summarized my findings in a research report. The report was successfully presented to the Chief Product Officer.

Problem Statement:

“Why are there limited resources available for the Deaf, Hard of hearing, and hearing people to learn any type of sign language?

Sorensign Research Process: Summarized

Started out with the participant selection process, as I determined the right target audience for this project - internal interpreters, potential hearing & deaf users, developers, designers and project managers.

A list of questions was created for participants to answer. Each user interview was conducted via Microsoft Teams meeting. Notes were recorded and stored in Figjam.

The entire research process was summarized in a final report upon completion of interviews and thematic analysis. The report was shared with internal members of the company. Project has been put on hold due to prioritization of other current products.

Snapshots of the Process

Due to privacy & NDA limitations, the final report will remain confidential. Reach out to me directly at mageenat@gmail.com or report can be shared upon request during interview stage.

Resolution, Reflection & Impact

  • Out of all participants interviewed, more than 75% indicated that there is a need for this product in the real world and there’s unlimited potential for expansion.

  • Most people are thrilled about the idea of learning multiple sign languages via mobile app but they want the process to incorporate human connection.

  • The demand for accessibility in the Deaf and Hard-of-hearing community continues to grow as companies like Nvidia and Google are recently entering the market for innovative communication solutions.
